fungi in the garden
Reclaimed timber steps may not be to everyone’s taste, but they are certainly a great way of keeping the ecological footprint small. Laid only in August, the Cup and Tear Dropper fungi on these steps fruited in the warm, wet weather of November.
But won’t they rot? Well, sure they will, over time. In the meantime, the fungi will contribute to the health of the surrounding soil, their fruits decorating the steps from time to time. They cost little, and are easily replaceable. Lots to like here.
I will have more to say about fungi over time. Here suffice to say that fungi - along with bacteria - are crucial in the decomposition of organic matter, and as such their presence is critical for overal soil structure and fertility and for carbon storage. Super companions in the garden!
